hot off the press

I have mixed feelings about social media. It is undoubtedly a powerful tool for any business, big or small. It has broadened opportunities to reach a far wider audience than ever before and has sparked a boom in entrepreneurship. However, it has changed how businesses view competition.

Long gone are the days when the focus was solely on providing better service or a more competitive price on your products compared to market competitors. Now, we are in a constant rat race of trying to be noticed based on our content. Yes, there are such things as algorithms, but these algorithms could be far removed from what your core business is, and simply based on the latest video trend you have jumped onto. We are now expected to be professional video editors, actors, comedians, public speakers, inventors, animators, and the list goes on. All this on top of trying to actually run a high-quality business is incredibly exhausting and overwhelming.

I do my best, I really do. But, to be quite honest, my least favourite activity is sitting at my phone or computer for hours, searching, editing, and posting just for a few likes here and there in the hope that one day I might go viral. It's like playing the lottery every day. So, I have decided with ArtBag to take a more grassroots approach alongside what social media I can manage. I believe there is nothing more valuable to a business than word-of-mouth and having people genuinely talk about your business—and I'm not referring to influencers.

For each ArtBag and artist I feature, I will be approaching local publications, magazines, newspapers, radio stations, and podcasts to build up the brand from a grassroots level. In the first five months of the business, this approach has proved to be very successful. I have had five releases so far, with another three in the pipeline. After years of social media posting and digital marketing, I am curious to see how far this traditional method will promote this new venture. I will continue to post all the publications below, so keep checking back to see the latest news and artists to join ArtBag!
