How Not to F*ck Up Your Designer Bag: The Louis Vuitton Neverfull
Tips from a professional handbag restorer
Welcome to the first instalment of How Not to F*ck Up Your Designer Bag, a series where I share real stories from my years restoring luxury handbags, the problems I regularly encounter, and how you can help prevent them.
We're starting with an absolute classic: the Louis Vuitton Neverfull.
I've worked on countless Neverfulls over the years. They're practical, versatile and incredibly popular, but there are a few recurring issues I've seen time and time again.
Let's get into them.
1. Don't neglect the inside of your Neverfull
One of the most common problems I've encountered is a seriously dirty interior.
Think crumbs, dust, makeup, spilled drinks and all the mystery debris that collects at the bottom of a handbag.
In some cases, even mould.
Prevention is always better than the cure!
One thing I always recommend to my customers is investing in a handbag liner for their Neverfull. Brands such as KD Australia and Zoomoni make organisers specifically designed to fit inside your bag.
Not only do they help keep all your belongings organised (no more rummaging around for your keys at the bottom!), but they also provide an extra layer of protection against everyday dirt, accidental spillages and stains.
They're removable, making them much easier to clean than the handbag itself.
It's such a simple addition, but it can make a huge difference in keeping the inside of your Neverfull looking as beautiful as the outside.
Trust me, cleaning a removable liner is a lot easier than restoring a stained handbag interior!
My tip: If you do not have a handbag liner then Empty your Neverfull regularly and give the interior some attention.
Depending on the model and its condition, you may be able to gently ease the soft body inside out for easier access to the bottom corners. Never force the lining, seams or hardware, and remember that classic Neverfulls aren't designed to be worn reversed.
Start by gently brushing away any loose dirt and debris using a soft brush, such as a toothbrush. Pay particular attention to the corners, seams and edges where dust and grime tend to collect.
Next, apply Luxe Mould Cleaner to a soft, clean cloth and gently wipe down the fabric lining. Follow with a light mist of the product over the interior, taking care not to oversaturate the material.
Mould thrives in damp environments, so keeping your handbag clean, dry and well-ventilated is essential. Always allow the lining to dry completely before turning your bag back the right way and storing it away.
2. Understanding your Neverfull's vachetta leather
Those beautiful pale leather handles and trims are made from natural, vegetable-tanned leather, commonly known as vachetta.
One of its defining characteristics is that it darkens naturally over time, developing a warm honey-coloured patina.
Personally, I love a beautiful natural patina.
But what I don't love is seeing handles that have become excessively dark, greasy or patchy.
Our hands naturally transfer oils, creams and everyday residue onto leather. With repeated handling, this can contribute to uneven discolouration.
Can you protect vachetta leather?
Preventative care is something I strongly believe in after years working in handbag restoration.
For vachetta leather, our Bagsamoré Luxe Leather Protector helps protect against oil and grease pentration, dye transfer and liquid staining, ,aking it an ideal choice for helping your vachetta leather patina in an even way.
Untreated vachetta is particularly sensitive and we always recommend patch testing first. The leather may darken on contact but will dry back to its original colour.
3. Regular maintenance makes a difference
One thing I've learned from restoring handbags is that everyday dirt can build up gradually, often without the owner noticing.
For suitable leather finishes, I recommend a gentle, regular cleaning routine before dirt becomes heavily ingrained.
Our Luxe Leather Handbag Cleaner is one of the products I use professionally for routine leather maintenance and is perfect for vachetta leather trims.
It's formulated for a wide range of leather types, including delicate and absorbent finishes, but always patch test before full application.
Where appropriate, apply the cleaner to a soft cloth rather than spraying directly onto the handbag.
Don't forget the coated canvas!
The iconic Louis Vuitton coated canvas requires a slightly different approach to cleaning. As the main body of the bag, it's constantly exposed to everyday dirt and grime, particularly around the base and corners where it comes into contact with different surfaces.
Over time, dirt can become embedded in the textured grain of the canvas, making it difficult to remove with a simple wipe.
This is where our Bagsamoré Luxe Foam Cleaner comes in!
Designed for a deeper clean, the gentle foam works into the textured surface to help lift stubborn, built-up dirt and grime without leaving unwanted residue behind.
Regular cleaning can make a huge difference in keeping that iconic Louis Vuitton canvas looking fresh and beautiful for years to come.
And please, avoid experimenting with random household cleaners!
4. Prevention really is better than restoration
I love restoring handbags, but the reality is that some damage is extremely difficult — or even impossible — to reverse completely.
Regular care, sensible storage and understanding the materials your handbag is made from can make a huge difference to how beautifully it ages.
That's why I've developed Bagsamoré's professional handbag care range, helping you look after your favourite bags at home.
